History for East tennis

Posted

The Central Bucks East tennis team is heading to the PIAA tournament for what is believed to be the first time in its history. The No. 4 Patriots defeated No. 6 Radnor 3-0 in Tuesday’s play-in match to clinch the fifth and final District One 3A states slot.

CB East swept No. 13 Upper Dublin 5-0 in last Wednesday’s first round before falling to 3-2 to No. 5 Downingtown East in the quarterfinals. The Patriots beat Penncrest 4-1 in a Monday playback.

The Patriots’ top three singles players – Sal Ponamgi, Alan Zhang and Devin Yang – are all freshmen or sophomores. Their No. 1 doubles tandem of Seth Patel (sophomore) and Jerry Cheng (freshman) are also underclassmen. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Aaron Rose and junior Fedir Knyazkov round out the squad.

No. 8 Central Bucks West put up a hard fight, but lost to No. 9 Penncrest 3-2 in the first round. No. 2 Lower Merion swept No. 15 Council Rock North 5-0 in the opening round.

PIAA play begins on May 14 at the Hershey Racquet Club. East will face the District 3 champion; Manheim Township played Dallastown for the crown late Wednesday.
