Both my wife and myself attended the horsemen’s annual awards dinner at Celebrations in Bensalem on Saturday night Feb.17. I am strictly a contributor at the betting windows at Parx or online wagering on TV. I leave the ownership or the training of these incredible animals in the hands of others.
Many awards were handed out to the skilled trainers and horses, all exceptional at what they do. And that’s winning horse races, which they do with regularity.
We sat at a table surrounded by members of “Turning for Home” which helps find homes and second lives for retired race horses.
These people are heroes as they allow a continuation of life for the ex-racehorses instead of a date with the slaughterhouse.
Horses usually can live for many years after retiring from racing if they avoid that fate.
We had never attended one of these dinners in the past. We were very impressed with the facility, food and being surrounded by good people who thoroughly seemed to be enjoying themselves. We would be honored to attend next year.
