Pennridge wins leagues
Here’s the number: 113-23.
That just happens to be the combined record this year of Pennridge’s four lightest starters: 106 Kordell Rush, 113 Matt Parker, 120 Scott Parker and 126 Ben Ross. All four took home individual titles Sunday in their home gym as the postseason got under way with the Suburban One League (SOL) Continental Conference Championships in East Rockhill.
With six individual champions, the Rams also won the team event by a healthy margin, 177.5-125, over second-place Quakertown. Central Bucks East (110.5), Central Bucks West (72.5) and Central Bucks South (67) placed fifth through seventh. North Penn, which finished in a tie with Pennridge atop the SOL Continental standings in 2013-14, was third with a total of 122.5.
The Rams’ triumphs at 113, 120 and 126 weren’t at all surprising. The Parker brothers and Ross were the top seeds in their respective weight classes. Rush was seeded second to Quakertown’s Collyn Dorney, but the Pennridge sophomore was awarded the victory at 106 when Dorney fell by injury default in the final.
In a battle of freshmen, Matt Parker eked out a 3-1 victory over Panther Harrison Campbell in the final at 113, while Scott Parker and Ross both won by technical fall on their way to the top of the podium. Parker beat Hatboro-Horsham’s Phil Torresani in 3:05, and Ross needed 5:46 to down CB East’s Michael Driver.
At 160, Pennridge’s Kyle Gentile made it a technical fall trifecta by sinking Hatboro-Horsham’s Connor Bodnar in 5:10 for the crown, while teammate Joe Kracz pinned Hatter Nick Schuck in 1:14 in the heavyweight division for the title.
The Patriots returned to Holicong with a pair of champs. Evan Wilson landed a 15-2 major decision over North Penn’s Colin Shannon at 138, and Mark Remmey picked up a victory by 7-2 decision over Hatboro-Horsham’s Matt Chapman at 220.
CB East nearly had a third individual triumph, but in a minor upset, CB West’s Riley Barth pinned Patriots senior Francesco Fabozzi, who had entered Sunday unbeaten at 29-0 on the season, in 3:57 at 145 pounds. The Bucks junior is now 30-1 in 2013-14.
CB West also had two second-place finishers: 132 Jason Stout, who fell to Hatter Matt Swiacki, 12-10, in the championship final, and 152 Bryan Jastrzebski, who went down to North Penn’s Jeff Reimel by 8-2 decision.
Other runners-up included: Pennridge’s 182 Andrew Reinhold (lost to Knight Alex Price by fall in 0:56) and 195 Ezra Outlaw (lost to North Penn’s Chris Barr by 5-4 decision) and Quakertown’s 170 Matt Stoneback (lost to Souderton’s Philip Stolfi by fall in 2:30).
The top four place winners will advance to Saturday’s District One Class AAA East Tournament at Hatboro-Horsham. Joining the aforementioned are: 106 Alex Shaffer, CB East, fourth at leagues; 113 Benjamin Drummond, CB South, third; 120 Kyle Murphy, CB South, fourth; 126 Tanner Seislove, Quakertown, fourth; 132 Tom Scarafone, CB South, third; 132 Ryan Chalifoux, CB East, fourth; 138 Dylan Gerhart, Pennridge, third; 138 Noah Wood, Quakertown, fourth; 152 Luke Garges, Quakertown, third; 152 Tom Roeder, Pennridge, fourth; 160 Nick Bonomo, Quakertown, third; 160 Jason Douple, CB West, fourth; 182 Gavin Caroff, Quakertown, third; 182 Justin O’Connor, CB West, fourth; 195 Micah Jones, Quakertown, third; 220 Daniel Marks, CB South, third; 285 A.J. Jordan, CB East, third; and 285 Sean Peniston, CB South, fourth.
