Bill Hahn: Motorsports News and Notes
The Chase is on
With three races remaining in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship, Jeff Gordon took a huge step for the crown by winning the Goody’s 500 Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
Gordon passed points leader Matt Kenseth with 21 laps left and ran to victory. It’s hard to believe that it was his first win of the season, but it came at the right time, vaulting him into third place in the standings, 27 points behind Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson. In my opinion, this probably will turn out to be a three-horse race to the finish line, and Gordon has the momentum to pull it off.
One of the best racers who I have had the pleasure to see from time to time is John Force, who has won an unprecedented 16th NHRA Funny Car championship. He’s the winningest driver in history, with win No. 138 coming at the Toyota NHRA Nationals. Force’s crew chief, Jimmy Prock, became only the third crew chief to win the NHRA Funny Car championship with two different drivers (Robert Hight being the other).
It was also an impressive day for Rookie of the Year candidate Brittany Force, as she won in the first round in Top Fuel. The racing season is winding down and now is the time for teams to be seeking partners for 2014. To help everyone with their sponsorship efforts, Ernie Saxton Communications is offering a package of sponsorship helps and needs. For information, call 215-752-7797.
Donny Krietz in the famous No. 69 Sprint Car put together a great season by winning the season-ending feature at Williams Grove. Davey Brown Sr. has put his years of knowledge to work for the team. Don’t forget the Vargo Dragway Car Show and the Riegelsville Kiwanis Fall Roll Out. Remember to thank a veteran.
