Six years ago, Sensei Stacy Pursell, junior chief instructor of Bucks County Karate School, and Sensei Andrew Spivack, chief instructor of Warwick Shotokan Karate Club, enrolled in The American Japanese Karate Association International/USA Instructor Training Program held locally at The Solebury Club, which hosts the AJKAPA headquarters.
The AJKA-I Instructor Training Program is designed with two goals in mind. First, to encourage the formal training of karate instructors for the development of AJKA-I Shotokan Karate-do. Second, to help participants develop interpersonal, class presentation, skills necessary to motivate and guide others in their search to understand and master the art of Shotokan Karate-do.
In addition to attending hundreds of hours of classroom and physical training time, both men showed what they learned by writing the required 42 reports on the specific aspects of karate that they learned through their experience. The next stage of the training included an additional report on an assigned topic that each sensei then had to teach to a class of their karate peers in front of a panel of the highest ranking AJKA-I/USA instructors from across the country.
Pursell and Spivack received their Class C Instructor certification at the end of the AJKAI Shotokan Karate Symposium, which was held at the Solebury Club Feb. 16 and 17.
